Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1877–1960) was a monumental Turkish Islamic scholar, theologian, philosopher, and spiritual revivalist who stands as one of the most influential Muslim intellectuals of the 20th century. Born in the village of Nurs in eastern Anatolia, his extraordinary intellect and photographic memory earned him the title *Bediuzzaman* (The Wonder of the Age) at a very young age. He spent his early life engaging with both traditional religious sciences and modern secular disciplines, seeking to establish a university that combined the two.
Nursi lived through the turbulent collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent rise of the strictly secular Turkish Republic. Witnessing the systematic secularization of society, he completely withdrew from politics to focus entirely on saving and revitalizing faith. Despite facing decades of imprisonment, state surveillance, and exile by the government, he authored a groundbreaking 6,000-page Quranic commentary titled the *Risale-i Nur* (The Epistles of Light). Rather than a traditional verse-by-verse exegesis, the *Risale-i Nur* is a profound thematic and philosophical defense of Islamic creeds, using rational, scientifically grounded arguments to counter modern materialism and atheism. His work gave rise to a vast, peaceful civil movement known as the Nurcu movement, which played a pivotal role in the preservation of Turkey's Islamic identity. He passed away on March 23, 1960, leaving a monumental intellectual legacy that continues to inspire millions of readers globally.
