Moulvi Chiragh Ali

Moulvi Chiragh Ali (1844–1895) was a leading 19th-century South Asian modernist Islamic scholar, reformist thinker, and close associate of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan within the Aligarh Movement. Born in Meerut, British India, he possessed a deep familiarity with both Islamic texts and Western literature, which he used to systematically defend Islam against contemporary colonial and orientalist critiques. Chiragh Ali is highly celebrated for his groundbreaking work in reinterpreting Islamic jurisprudence (Shariah) and the concept of jihad through a lens of rationalism and historical context. His seminal English works, including A Critical Exposition of the Popular Jihad and The Proposed Political, Legal, and Social Reforms in the Ottoman Empire, argued that all early Islamic military campaigns were strictly defensive rather than aggressive instruments for forced conversion. He advocated for progressive legal and educational reforms, emphasizing that Islamic law was dynamic and fully compatible with modern civilizational growth.
