About Author:

Syed Abul A'la Maududi (1903–1979) was a monumental 20th-century Pakistani Islamic scholar, philosopher, journalist, and political thinker who stands as one of the most influential theoreticians of modern political Islam. Born in Aurangabad, British India, into a family with a rich spiritual lineage, he began his career as a highly articulate journalist. In 1941, he founded the Jamaat-e-Islami, a disciplined revivalist movement aimed at transforming society through structural Islamic reform. Following the partition of the subcontinent in 1947, he migrated to Pakistan, where he became a key player in the nation's early constitutional and political development, actively advocating for the implementation of an Islamic state model. Maududi was an incredibly prolific writer, authoring over a hundred books and treatises that reinterpreted traditional Islamic law, governance, economics, and sociology to answer contemporary Western ideological challenges. His undisputed magnum opus is *Tafhim-ul-Qur'an* (Towards Understanding the Qur'an), a monumental Urdu translation and commentary that took thirty years to complete and is celebrated globally for its modern social critique and lucid, accessible style. His other highly influential works include *Khilafat o Malukiyat*, *Islami Riyasat*, and *Purdah*. His revolutionary ideas on sovereignty and the comprehensive nature of Islamic life deeply impacted global revivalist movements like the Muslim Brotherhood in the Arab world. He passed away on September 22, 1979, and remains an anchor of modern South Asian Islamic scholarship.
