Khawaja Ahmed Din Amritsari

Khawaja Ahmed Din Amritsari (died 1936) was a prominent early 20th-century Islamic scholar, exegete, and reformer from Amritsar, British India, who is widely recognized as one of the pioneer thinkers of the Ahl-e-Quran (Quranist) movement in the Subcontinent. Alongside figures like Abdullah Chakralvi, he broke sharply from orthodox scholasticism by advocating that the Holy Quran is the exclusive, self-sufficient source of Islamic law and belief, largely rejecting classical Hadith literature as a reliable foundation for Sharia. Operating from his main intellectual hub in Amritsar, he established an independent school of thought that favored rationalism and intellect over traditional consensus. He authored several notable treatises and a well-known commentary titled Tafseer Bayan-ul-Naas, in which he presented heavily non-traditional interpretations of ritual practices—such as arguing that the mandatory daily prayers numbered two rather than five based on his structural readings of the Quran. His independent methodology sparked deep intellectual debates and drew severe theological backlash from mainstream Sunni orthodox circles, yet his legacy remains foundational to modern Quran-centric intellectual discourse.
