Allama Fateh Muhammad Jalandhari

Allama Fateh Muhammad Jalandhari (1895–1971) was a legendary South Asian Sunni Islamic scholar, linguist, and translator whose monumental Urdu translation of the Holy Quran remains one of the most widely read, authentic, and universally accepted translations in the world. Born in Hoshiarpur, British India, into a family with ancestral roots tracking back to Afghanistan, he later settled in Jalandhar, Punjab, where he completed his early upbringing and education. Academically and spiritually aligned with the traditionalist Deobandi methodology, he was an indirect disciple of the celebrated 19th-century Muhaddith Shah Ishaq Dehlavi. Driven by a mission to make scriptural understanding accessible to the general public, Jalandhari undertook the task of refining and simplifying existing Urdu translations—such as the classical legalistic rendering by Deputy Nazir Ahmad—into contemporary, fluid, and deeply eloquent Urdu prose. His masterwork, titled Fath al-Hamid, was famously published without the parallel Arabic text under the title Noor-e-Hidayat. Decades later, his translation was officially adopted by Radio Pakistan for its daily morning broadcasts, widely printed by major publishers like the Taj Company, and distributed globally by the King Fahd Holy Qur'an Printing Complex in Medina alongside the Dawah Academy of the International Islamic University, Islamabad. Beyond scriptural translation, Jalandhari was a highly accomplished grammarian who authored a definitive series of language textbooks including Mabadi al-Qawaid and Minhaj al-Qawaid, which served as core curriculum frameworks for schools across the subcontinent. He spent his later years in Pakistan dedicated to educational reformation until his passing on April 21, 1971.
