About Author:

Reynold Alleyne Nicholson (1868–1945) was a monumental English orientalist, academic, and translator who stands as one of the world's foremost authorities on Islamic mysticism (Sufism) and classical Persian literature. Born in Keighley, Yorkshire, he was educated at Aberdeen University and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he later served for many years as the Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic. Combining linguistic genius with a profound philosophical sensibility, he dedicated his life to translating and interpreting the vast treasure trove of Islamic mystical texts for the Western world. Nicholson is universally celebrated for his unmatched contributions to Rumi studies. His undisputed masterwork is his complete translation and commentary of Jalal al-Din Rumi’s *Masnavi*, published in eight volumes between 1925 and 1940. This monumental project provided the first literal English translation of Rumi's magnum opus, setting the definitive standard for modern academic research. South Asian scholars deeply revere him for translating the philosophical masterpiece *Asrar-i-Khudi* (The Secrets of the Self) by Pakistan’s spiritual father, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, in 1920, introduced with an influential critical preface. His other highly influential published books include *A Literary History of the Arabs*, *The Mystics of Islam*, and his translation of Al-Hujwiri’s classical Sufi treatise, *Kashf al-Mahjub*. Through his rigorous scholarly methodologies, he successfully bridged cultural barriers and laid the foundation for modern comparative studies on Islamic spiritual philosophy.

(The Secrets of the Self)
