Maulana Abul Kalam Azad

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888–1958), born Sayyid Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini, was a monumental 20th-century South Asian Islamic theologian, anti-colonial revolutionary leader, brilliant journalist, and senior statesman who served as the first Minister of Education of independent India. Born in Mecca into an illustrious family of Islamic scholars, he returned to Calcutta (Kolkata) as a youth and mastered traditional religious sciences before independently absorbing modern philosophy and science. Azad revolutionized Subcontinental political and religious discourse by launching the deeply influential Urdu weekly newspapers Al-Hilal and Al-Balagh, utilizing them to weave a text-centric, rationalist interpretation of the Quran with a fierce call for inter-communal unity and liberation from British rule. A key leader of the Indian National Congress, he staunchly opposed the partition of India on profound religious and cultural grounds. Azad is globally celebrated for his magisterial, unfinished Urdu commentary, Tarjuman-ul-Quran, which rejected archaic scholastic dogmas to champion universal humanism and a structured reading of Quranic vocabulary. He passed away in New Delhi, leaving behind a lasting intellectual legacy as an architect of modern public education and pluralistic Islamic thought.
