Dr. Taha Hussein

Dr. Taha Hussein (1889–1973) was a monumental 20th-century Egyptian writer, intellectual, literary critic, and educational reformer widely revered as the "Dean of Arabic Literature" (Ameed al-Adab al-Arabi). Blind from early childhood due to illness, he defied physical limitations through pure academic brilliance, studying at Al-Azhar University before becoming the first graduate to earn a PhD from Cairo University, and later completing a doctorate at the Sorbonne in Paris. Hussein pioneered modern, secular historical-critical analysis in Arabic literature, sparking massive theological controversy with his landmark 1926 book Fi al-Shadr al-Jahili ("On Pre-Islamic Poetry"), which questioned the historical authenticity of classical poems and early narratives. Serving as Egypt's Minister of Education from 1950 to 1952, he institutionalized free public education, declaring learning to be "as necessary as water and air." His extensive literary legacy includes his globally acclaimed autobiography Al-Ayyam ("The Days") and numerous treatises advocating for a synthesis of Egyptian culture with Western humanist traditions.
