Sayyid Qutb (1906–1966) was an Egyptian writer, literary critic, and Islamic thinker whose works have been widely read and discussed throughout the twentieth-century Muslim world and beyond. Early in his career he wrote literary criticism and essays, and he later turned increasingly to Quranic studies and Islamic thought. His best-known work is Fi Zilal al-Quran (In the Shade of the Quran), a multi-volume commentary on the Quran written in a reflective, literary style that seeks to connect the Quranic message with the spiritual and social life of the reader. The library holds this commentary in Urdu translation, in volumes one through six. Also available here is Ma'alim fi al-Tariq (Milestones), rendered in Urdu as Jada o Manzil, a shorter and more polemical work addressing questions of faith, society, and the direction of the Muslim community.
