About Author:

Maulana Rahmatullah Kairanwi (1818–1891) was a monumental 19th-century South Asian Islamic scholar, theologian, and freedom fighter who is globally celebrated as a pioneer of modern interfaith dialogue and comparative religious study. Born in Kairana, British India, into an illustrious scholarly family tracing its lineage to the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, he mastered traditional Islamic sciences, Arabic, Persian, and medicine at academic hubs in Delhi and Lucknow. Kairanwi achieved historic prominence for defending Islam against institutional Christian missionary onslaughts during British colonial rule. In April 1854, he engaged in the famous public debate in Agra against the prominent German missionary Karl Gottlieb Pfander. Utilizing rigorous internal textual and historical biblical criticism, Kairanwi successfully demonstrated alterations within biblical manuscripts, securing a landmark intellectual victory. Following his active participation in the 1857 Indian War of Independence, his properties were confiscated by colonial authorities, forcing him into permanent exile in the Ottoman Hejaz. Settling in Mecca, he was appointed a lecturer at the Masjid al-Haram. In 1874, with the financial support of a wealthy female benefactor from Calcutta, he founded *Madrasa Saulatiya*, the first modern institutional Islamic seminary in Mecca, which educated prominent scholars globally. His undisputed magnum opus, *Izhar-ul-Haq* (The Demonstration of the Truth), written in Arabic in 1864, remains a classic encyclopedic masterpiece of comparative religion and has been translated into multiple world languages. He passed away in Mecca and was laid to rest in the historic Jannat al-Mu'alla cemetery.
