Niaz Fatehpuri (born Niaz Mohammad Khan; 1884–1966) was an eminent Pakistani critic, essayist, novelist, journalist, and Islamic scholar who ranks among the most influential figures in 20th-century Urdu literature. Born in Fatehpur, British India, he received a traditional education in Arabic, Persian, and Islamic jurisprudence. He achieved widespread literary acclaim after founding *Nigar* in 1922, a monthly Urdu literary journal that became a cornerstone of modern Urdu criticism, introducing institutional standards of analytical rigor and rationalism to the subcontinent's literary landscape. Fatehpuri was celebrated for his unique, highly sophisticated prose style, known as *Romani Nasr* (Romantic Prose), and his unwavering advocacy for rationalism and free thought. His deeply analytical and often unconventional approach to religious history and theology frequently placed him at the center of fierce intellectual and theological debates. Following his migration to Pakistan in 1962, he settled in Karachi, where he continued his literary endeavors. In recognition of his massive lifelong contributions to Urdu language and literature, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan in 1962. His notable published works include *Intiqadiyat*, *Mazameen-e-Niaz*, *Shaair ka Anjam*, and *Husn ki Ayyariyan*. He passed away in Karachi on May 24, 1966.
