About Author:

Mahmood Ahmed Abbasi (1885–1974) was a prominent Pakistani historian, researcher, author, and poet known for his provocative historical analyses and contributions to Islamic and regional historiography. Born into an affluent and scholarly family in Amroha, British India, he spent his early formative years in intellectual hubs like Lucknow, Delhi, and Aligarh. Following the partition of the subcontinent, he migrated to Pakistan in 1951 and permanently settled in Karachi, where he dedicated the remainder of his life to intensive research and writing. Abbasi gained widespread fame—and courted substantial controversy—for his revisionist approach to early Islamic history. He is best known for his polemical work *Khilafat-e-Muawiya wa Yazeed* (1958), which challenged conventional historical narratives regarding the early Caliphates and the tragedy of Karbala. His perspectives sparked intense theological debates across South Asia, directly prompting Abul A'la Maududi to write his famous counter-treatise *Khilafat o Malukiyat*, to which Abbasi subsequently responded with *Haqeeqat Khilafat wa Malookiat*. Beyond Islamic polemics, Abbasi was an accomplished genealogist and regional historian, authoring the comprehensive multi-volume historical chronicle *Tareekh-e-Amroha*. His other significant literary works include *Tazkirat-ul-Kiram*, *Tehqeeq-e-Sadaat*, and *Tahqeeq-ul-Ansab*. He passed away on March 14, 1974, and was laid to rest in Karachi.
