Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah

Ibn Taymiyyah (1263–1328 CE / 661–728 AH), full name Taqi al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim ibn Taymiyyah, was a monumental medieval Syrian Islamic scholar, theologian, jurist, and polemicist who remains one of the most profoundly influential and contested figures in Islamic history. Born in Harran (modern-day Turkey), his family fled to Damascus to escape the brutal Mongol invasions when he was a child. He mastered Hanbali jurisprudence and traditional sciences at an early age, eventually succeeding his father as a professor of Hadith. Living through a tumultuous era of political instability and external threats, he combined academic work with direct physical and political action, famously issuing historic fatwas rallying the Mamluk sultanate against the invading Muslim-convert Mongols (Ilkhanate) and fighting on the battlefields. Ibn Taymiyyah is celebrated for his fiercely independent methodology, adamantly rejecting blind adherence to medieval consensus (taqlid) and aggressively critiquing what he identified as heterodox philosophical innovations (bid'ah), Greek logic, speculative theology (Kalam), and certain esoteric Sufi practices. He authored hundreds of seminal masterworks—most notably his massive legal anthology Majmu' al-Fatawa, his critique of Shia theology Minhaj as-Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah, and his philosophical refutation of logicians Dar' Ta'arud al-Aql wa-n-Naql. Because his highly uncompromising and innovative legal rulings frequently ran afoul of both rival orthodox ulema and Mamluk state authorities, he spent multiple prolonged periods imprisoned, ultimately passing away inside the Citadel of Damascus, leaving behind an intellectual blueprint that heavily inspired modern Salafi, reformist, and Islamist movements across the globe.
