Imam Ibn Kathir (1301–1373 CE / 701–774 AH), full name Abu al-Fida' 'Imad ad-Din Isma'il ibn 'Umar ibn Kathir, was a monumental 14th-century Syrian Islamic scholar, traditionist, theologian, and historian who stood as one of the most definitive authorities of the Mamluk era. Born in Mijdal, a village on the outskirts of Busra in southern Syria, he migrated to Damascus at a young age following the death of his father to pursue advanced Islamic education. He studied under the leading scholars of his generation, most notably the legendary and controversial reformer Ibn Taymiyyah, whose rigorous textual literalism and theological frameworks profoundly shaped Ibn Kathir's intellectual trajectory. Ibn Kathir held several prestigious academic and judicial positions in Damascus, serving as a prominent professor at the Great Umayyad Mosque and directing leading madrasas. He is globally celebrated as the author of two of the most widely read and authoritative masterworks in Islamic history: Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Azeem (popularly known as Tafsir Ibn Kathir), which pioneered the methodology of interpreting the Quran through the Quran itself and authentic Hadith, and Al-Bidayah wa-n-Nihayah ("The Beginning and the End"), a monumental multi-volume universal chronicle spanning creation, prophetic history, and the Islamic caliphate up to his era. He passed away in Damascus and was buried, according to his final wishes, next to his master Ibn Taymiyyah.
