Dr. Ghulam Jilani Barq

Dr. Ghulam Jilani Barq (1901–1985) was an exceptionally brilliant 20th-century Pakistani Islamic scholar, theologian, academic, and polyglot whose intellectual trajectory stands as one of the most uniquely debated chapters in South Asian rationalist thought. Born in Basal, Attock District, British India, into a religious Syed family, he achieved extraordinary academic milestones, securing gold medals in Arabic and Persian before completing an English-language Ph.D. thesis on Ibn Taymiyyah in 1940, which was ratified by global universities like Oxford and Harvard. Barq initially emerged as a fiercely vocal, radical critic of traditional theology and mainstream Hadith adherence. His landmark early books, Do Islam ("Two Islams", 1949) and Do Quran ("Two Qurans"), argued that historical accretions, blind traditionalism, and structural fabricated narrations had replaced the dynamic, original scientific spirit of the Quran. These uncompromising rationalist treatises drew severe, widespread theological backlashes from orthodox religious circles, which labeled him a "Hadith-rejector" (Munkir-e-Hadith). Later in his career, amidst intense scholarly counter-arguments and social pushback, Barq published Tareekh-e-Hadith ("The History of Hadith") and his final intellectual confession, Meri Akhri Kitab ("My Last Book"). In these, he famously modified his stance, retracting his harshest structural criticisms and affirming the foundational importance of the Prophetic tradition, which dramatically restored his standing among conventional traditionalists. A prolific man of letters who authored nearly forty books spanning philosophy, history, and social ethics, he passed away in Attock.
