Dr. Fazlur Rahman

Dr. Fazlur Rahman (1919–1988) was a monumental 20th-century Pakistani Islamic philosopher, academic, and reformist theologian widely revered as the foundational intellectual grandfather of modern Islamic hermeneutics and liberal Islamic thought. Born in Hazara, British India, he received a classical madrasa education from his father before graduating from Punjab University and earning a D.Phil in Islamic Philosophy from the University of Oxford. After teaching in England and Canada, he was appointed by President Ayub Khan as the Director of the Central Institute of Islamic Research in Pakistan to help structurally align state policies with modern legal interpretations. Faced with severe backlash from traditionalist orthodox ulema due to his progressive views, he relocated to the United States in 1969, spending his remaining decades as a Distinguished Professor at the University of Chicago. Dr. Rahman authored seminal English masterworks, including Islam, Major Themes of the Quran, and Islam and Modernity, where he pioneered the "double-movement" hermeneutic method—advocating that the historical context of Quranic revelation must be separated from its universal, immutable ethical intent to address contemporary global issues.

ڈاکٹر فضل الرحمن (1919ء–1988ء) بیسویں صدی کے ایک عظیم پاکستانی اسلامی فلسفی، ماہرِ تعلیم اور مصلح متکلم تھے، جنہیں جدید اسلامی قانون، آزاد خیال فہمِ دین اور تاویلی نظامِ فکر (Hermeneutics) کا ایک بڑا معمار تسلیم کیا جاتا ہے۔ وہ برطانوی ہند کے خطے ہزارہ میں پیدا ہوئے اور انہوں نے اپنے والد سے روایتی درسِ نظامی کی تعلیم حاصل کرنے کے بعد پنجاب یونیورسٹی سے گریجویشن کیا اور آکسفورڈ یونیورسٹی سے اسلامی فلسفے میں ڈی فل (ڈاکٹریٹ) کی ڈگری حاصل کی۔ برطانیہ اور کینیڈا میں تدریسی خدمات انجام دینے کے بعد صدر ایوب خان نے انہیں پاکستان کے مرکزی ادارۂ تحقیقاتِ اسلامی کا ڈائریکٹر مقرر کیا تاکہ وہ ریاستی پالیسیوں کو جدید تقاضوں کے مطابق ڈھالنے میں مدد کریں۔ ان کے ترقی پسند افکار کے باعث قدامت پسند علما کی جانب سے پیدا ہونے والی شدید مخالفت کے بعد انہوں نے 1969ء میں امریکہ ہجرت کی اور یونیورسٹی آف شکاگو میں بطور ممتاز پروفیسر طویل عرصہ خدمات سرانجام دیں۔ ڈاکٹر فضل الرحمن نے انگریزی زبان میں معرکہ آرا کتب تصنیف کیں، جن میں "Islam"، "Major Themes of the Quran" (قرآن کے بنیادی مضامین) اور "Islam and Modernity" شامل ہیں؛ انہوں نے قرآن فہمی کے لیے "دو طرفہ فکری سفر" (Double-movement method) کا منفرد فلسفہ پیش کیا، جس کا موقف تھا کہ قرآن کے آفاقی اخلاقی قوانین کو اس کے نزول کے عارضی تاریخی حالات سے الگ کر کے ہی جدید دور کے عالمی مسائل کا حل نکالا جا سکتا ہے۔
