Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali

Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali (1837–1914) was an eminent 19th-century Urdu poet, biographer, literary critic, and social reformer who served as one of the most foundational pillars of the Aligarh Movement alongside Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Born in Panipat, British India, he received a traditional Islamic education before moving to Delhi and Lahore, where he engaged with colonial literary shifts and met his intellectual mentor, Sir Syed. Hali revolutionized Urdu literature by steering it away from traditional, artificial romanticism toward "natural poetry" focused on social reality and collective progress. His epoch-making long poem, Musaddas-e-Hali (1879), provided a poignant historical critique of the rise and decline of Islamic civilization, acting as a massive wake-up call for the socio-economic revival of South Asian Muslims. A pioneering biographer and critic, he authored Hayat-e-Javed (a definitive biography of Sir Syed), Hayat-e-Sadi, and Muqaddama-e-Sher-o-Shairi, which remains the first formal work of Urdu literary criticism. He passed away in Panipat, leaving an indelible imprint on modern Urdu prose and social reformism.

مولانا الطاف حسین حالی (1837ء–1914ء) انیسویں صدی کے ایک مایہ ناز اردو شاعر، سوانح نگار، نقاد اور مصلح قوم تھے، جنہوں نے سر سید احمد خان کے ہمراہ علی گڑھ تحریک کے ایک بنیادی ستون کی حیثیت سے خدمات سرانجام دیں۔ وہ برطانوی ہند کے شہر پانی پت میں پیدا ہوئے اور انہوں نے روایتی اسلامی تعلیم حاصل کرنے کے بعد دہلی اور لاہور کا رخ کیا، جہاں انہوں نے اپنے دور کے ادبی تغیرات کا مطالعہ کیا اور سر سید احمد خان کی صحبت اختیار کی۔ حالی نے اردو ادب کو روایتی و مصنوعی مبالغہ آرائی اور حسن و عشق کے قصوں سے نکال کر "نیچرل شاعری" (مقصدیت پسندی) کی طرف موڑا، جس کا مرکز معاشرتی حقائق اور اجتماعی ترقی تھا۔ ان کی طویل اور شہرہ آفاق نظم "مسدسِ حالی" (مد و جزرِ اسلام) نے اسلامی تہذیب کے عروج و زوال کا ایک ایسا دردناک نقشہ کھینچا جس نے برصغیر کے مسلمانوں کو بیدار کرنے اور ان میں تعلیمی و معاشی شعور پیدا کرنے میں ایک تاریخی کردار ادا کیا۔ وہ اردو کے اولین باقاعدہ سوانح نگار اور نقاد مانے جاتے ہیں؛ انہوں نے سر سید کی سوانح عمری "حیاتِ جاوید"، "حیاتِ سعدی" اور اردو تنقید کی پہلی باقاعدہ کتاب "مقدمہ شعر و شاعری" تصنیف کیں، اور پانی پت میں وفات پا کر جدید اردو نثر اور سماجی مصلحین کی تاریخ میں ایک دائمی مقام حاصل کیا۔
