Allama Mashriqi

Allama Mashriqi (1888–1963), born Inayatullah Khan Khaksar in Amritsar, British India, was a legendary Pakistani mathematical genius, religious philosopher, and anti-colonial revolutionary leader who founded the historic militant-style Khaksar Movement in 1931. A true child prodigy, he broke world academic records at the University of Cambridge, completing four distinct triposes in mathematics, natural sciences, mechanical engineering, and oriental languages in just five years, earning him the title "Mashriqi" (The Sage of the East). Rejecting the passive religious practices of his era, he returned to India and entered educational service before dedicating his life to political action. Mashriqi authored the monumental Quranic commentary Tazkirah (1924), which was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature and advanced a highly unorthodox, action-oriented interpretation of Islam that defined true faith through physical discipline, scientific excellence, and social struggle. His Khaksar organization—characterized by paramilitary uniforms, standard spades (belas), and public service drills—aimed to unite all communities regardless of creed to overthrow British rule. Following the partition of 1947, he continued his fierce political activism in Pakistan, spending multiple periods under house arrest and imprisonment before passing away in Lahore.
