Ahmed Amin

Ahmed Amin (1886–1954) was an eminent 20th-century Egyptian historian, literary critic, jurist, and progressive academic who stood as one of the most brilliant pillars of the Arabic intellectual enlightenment movement. Born in Cairo to a conservative scholarly family, he graduated from Al-Azhar University and the School of Sharia Law, practicing as a religious judge (Qadi) until 1926. He transitioned into secular academia at Cairo University under the mentorship of Taha Hussein, eventually serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Amin is globally celebrated for his monumental, definitive three-volume history of Islamic cultural civilization: Fajr al-Islam ("The Dawn of Islam"), Duha l-Islam ("The Forenoon of Islam"), and Zuhr al-islam ("The Noon of Islam"). As a leading reformist thinker heavily influenced by Muhammad Abduh, his work introduced structural western methodologies to evaluate classical Arabic literary criticism and Islamic history. Beyond his histories, he was a prolific journalist editing Al-Risalah, founded cultural translation bureaus, and served as the director of the Arab League's cultural department before passing away in Cairo.

احمد امین (1886ء–1954ء) بیسویں صدی کے ایک مایاناز مصری مورخ، ادبی نقاد، قانون دان اور ترقی پسند ماہرِ تعلیم تھے، جو عرب تحریکِ بیداری اور اسلامی روشن خیالی کے صفِ اول کے مفکرین میں شمار کیے جاتے ہیں۔ وہ قاہرہ کے ایک قدامت پسند علمی خاندان میں پیدا ہوئے، اور جامعہ الازہر اور اسکول آف شرعیہ لا سے فارغ التحصیل ہونے کے بعد 1926ء تک بطور جج (قاضی) خدمات سرانجام دیتے رہے۔ بعد ازاں، اپنے قریبی دوست طہ حسین کی دعوت پر انہوں نے قاہرہ یونیورسٹی میں تدریس کا آغاز کیا اور وہاں فیکلٹی آف آرٹس کے ڈین کے عہدے تک پہنچے۔ احمد امین کو عالمی سطح پر اسلامی تہذیب و ثقافت کی تاریخ پر مشتمل ان کے تین جلدوں پر مبنی شاہکار کی وجہ سے شہرت حاصل ہے، جس میں "فجر الاسلام"، "ضحیٰ الاسلام" اور "ظہر الاسلام" شامل ہیں۔ شیخ محمد عبدہ کے مصلحانہ افکار سے متاثر ہو کر انہوں نے کلاسیکی عربی ادب اور تاریخِ اسلام کو پرکھنے کے لیے جدید مغربی اور عقلی تحقیقی طریقوں کو متعارف کروایا۔ وہ ایک کثیر التصانیف مصنف اور معروف جریدے "الرسالہ" کے ایڈیٹر بھی تھے، اور انہوں نے وفات سے قبل عرب لیگ کے ثقافتی شعبے کے ڈائریکٹر کی حیثیت سے بھی خدمات سرانجام دیں۔
