Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips (born Dennis Bradley Philips; 1946) is a globally prominent Jamaican-born Canadian Islamic scholar, educator, author, and speaker who has played a monumental role in modern international Islamic dawah. Born in Jamaica and raised in Canada, he embraced Islam in 1972 after a period of intense spiritual and political searching. He went on to achieve an exceptional academic foundation in traditional Islamic sciences, becoming the first convert to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree from the Islamic University of Madinah in 1979, followed by a Master’s degree from King Saud University, and a PhD in Islamic Theology from the University of Wales. Dr. Bilal Philips is highly celebrated for his rational, contemporary, and deeply structured approach to Islamic education. He is the founder and Chancellor of the International Open University (IOU), a pioneering virtual institution launched in 2007 that provides affordable, accredited university degrees in Islamic Studies and modern disciplines to hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. A highly prolific author, he has published over fifty books and textbooks used globally in Islamic educational curricula. His landmark works include *The Fundamentals of Tawheed*, *Evolution of Fiqh*, *Islamic Studies Book 1-4*, and *Tafseer Soorah al-Hujuraat*.
