Phenomena of Nature and the Quran

Dr. Syed Abdul Wadud (died 2001) was an eminent Pakistani biochemist, Islamic rationalist, and author who served as one of the primary intellectual proponents of the Quran-centric Tolu-e-Islam movement. A scientist by training, he became a dedicated disciple of the famous reformist scholar Ghulam Ahmed Perwez and spent decades popularizing a highly modern, scientific interpretation of the Holy Quran. Wadud was unique in the Subcontinental Quranist landscape because he specialized in scientific exegesis, bridging the gap between classical Arabic text and modern cosmic and evolutionary sciences. He authored several groundbreaking English works, most notably Phenomena of Nature and the Quran (1971), Gateway to the Quran, and The Heavens, the Earth and the Quran. In his literature, he argued that Quranic cosmology is entirely compatible with modern concepts like the expanding universe, quantum dynamics, and organic evolution. His analytical and empirical methodology bypassing blind traditionalism provided a sophisticated academic foundation for contemporary rationalist and science-oriented Quranic movements.
