Surat al-Haqqah is the 69th surah of the Qur'an with 52 ayat. There are several English names under which the surah is known. These include “The Inevitable Hour”, “The Indubitable”, “The Inevitable Truth”, and “The Reality”. These titles are derived from alternate translations of Al-Haqqa, the word that appears in the first three ayat of the surah. Though each of these titles may sound very different, each one alludes to the main theme of the surah – the Day of Judgment. Al-Haqqa is a Meccan sura, meaning it was revealed to the prophet while he lived in Mecca as opposed to Medina. Meccan suras divided into early, middle, and late periods. Theodor Nöldeke in his chronology of suras places the sura to be revealed in the early Meccan period. It is narrated from the Noble Prophet as saying that one who recites Surah al Haqqa, the burden of his sins shall be lessened. It is narrated from Imam Baqir that it is incumbent upon Muslims to recite Surah al-Haqqa many a time, since its recitation in ritual obligatory and supererogatory prayers serves as a token of believing in God Almighty and His Messenger and whoever recites it, his faith shall be intact until he meets his Lord’s Countenance,2 provided that he acts upon his religious obligations. --- Updated: 2018-08-18
